Matagorda County 4-H Mounted Drill Team sponsors teams for both beginner and veteran riders. We strive to teach horsemanship, professionalism, drill team preparation and execution, teamwork, competition, respect for authority and community service. We also seek to entertain through excellence in showmanship and to instill pride in a job well done.
The Drill Teams also host a fun and educational youth riding camp each year in the fall called Camp Saddle Sore. Camp Saddle Sore is a 3 day camp designed to instruct and teach riders horse care and management, riding skills and drill design. Riders come from all across the state and the camp is open to all levels of riders both drill and non drill team members.
2006 The Thundering Hooves traveled to Canton, TX to compete in the United States Equestrian Drill Competition (USEDC) on July 22nd. They performed a “New Orleans Mysteries” routine in the Theme Division and “American Solder Tribute” in the Open Division, with each performance drawing cheers from the crowd. When it came time for the awards and presentations, the Thundering Hooves placed 1st in Theme Division. That same night, the team traveled to Abilene, TX to begin preparations for the Texas State 4H Drill Team Competition. “Equestrian Ballet” was the theme for this year’s performance. At the end of the drill, a standing ovation and cheers exuded from the crowd. Thundering Hooves placed 4th in the Texas State 4H Competition. Thundering Hooves team members include: Erron Anderson (leader), Kendra Cox (leader), Amber Dale, Kalley Fikes, Kassi Golden, Rachel Johnson, Courtney Leissner, Kelsey Wallis, Amanda Vecera, Danielle Estes, Jessica Rodriguez, Kelli Rodriguez, Justin Clark, Beverly Vickrey, and Alex Walker.
Texas Thunder also competed in the competitions in Canton and Abilene performing to the theme of “Red Hot Riders”. Texas Thunder placed 2nd in the Youth Division in Canton and placed 6th in the rodeo division going against adult teams. They placed 6th in Abilene and had an outstanding run. Texas Thunder members include: Hannah Vern (leader), Cory McKelvy (leader), Heather Fort, Jennifer Fort, Marissa Dunn, Matthew Dunn, Elizabeth Anderson, Kellie Hunter, Haylee McKissick, and Thomas Bunte. Also, an adult-mixed team, The Saltgrass Cowgirls, competed in Canton consisting of Drill Team moms, current Drill Team members, and former Drill team members. They took 2nd in Novice Division and 1st in Mixed Division.Team members include: Nikki Smithey, Amy Miller, Debbie Matusek, Nay Fojtik, Paula Garza, Tammy Fort, Amanda Vecera, Cindy Tennant, Amber Dale, Jeane Brazell, and Erin Tobin.
