Wadsworth

Who to call in Wadsworth

Wadsworth is located on State Highway 60, about midway between Bay City and Matagorda. In the early 1900's, northern land speculators bought up land to develop and resell. John W. Stoddard and A.A. Plotner bought the land known as "Kemp Pasture." They created the Colonial Land Company and arranged for a railroad to run through the area. In 1902 the railroad was extended south from Bay City to Matagorda. It became vital to the economy, transporting cattle, grain, shell and sulphur. The Santa Fe built a depot in Wadsworth.

In 1838 Albert Wadsworth, a 25-year old sailor, became a merchant in Matagorda. The town of Wadsworth was named for his family.
