Who to call in Van Vleck The present site of Van Vleck was originally known as Hardeman's Post Office. Bailey Hardeman was one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence. By late 1899 a railroad had been brought to Matagorda County, and a tiny settlement grew up at its terminus. It was named Van Vleck for the Southern Pacific railroad superintendent, W.G. Van Vleck. The Hardeman post office was renamed the Van Vleck post office in January 1901. The town was originally northwest of its present location, but in 1930, when State Highway 35 was built, the town moved to the highway.
