City and County Government

Matagorda County is governed by a county judge and commissioners court. The judge presides over the court which is made up of four commissioners and the judge.

The court meets once a week, at 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning in the county courtroom at the courthouse. Citizens are welcome to attend the session, in which the court makes decisions on agenda items ranging from budget questions to proposals regarding street and road repair.

The county judge also runs a criminal court that adjudicates misdemeanor cases.

Each of the commissioners represents a portion of the county, as well as a section of Bay City, the county seat.

Bay City

Bay City government consists of a mayor and five city council members.

The mayor is Charles Martinez, Jr., who is in his third three-year term.

The council meets every other week, at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening at city hall. The council sets the city budget and determines how it will be spent.

Palacios

Palacios is the only other incorporated city in Matagorda County, and operates its own local government entity.

The city has a mayor, a council, and a city administrator.
