Focus on "Back to Basics"On behalf of Bay City Independent School District, greetings and welcome to our community.I am pleased to take this opportunity to tell you about some of the wonderful opportunities that are available for young people. Bay City ISD is a medium-sized school district with an enrollment of approximately 4,800 students and consists of one primary school, three elementary schools, two junior high schools and one high school of 1300 students. The seven schools serve students from grades Pre-K through 12 by offering a wide variety of curricular, extra curricular and target programs that address students' specific needs and provide each student the best possible opportunity for a complete education and total development. The District recognizes the need to produce graduates who have strong written and verbal communication skills, who are comfortable with higher mathematics calculations and who know how to use problem solving skills to work as members of a team toward a common goal. To that end, students at each grade level participate in a curriculum that focuses on a "back to basics" approach to the core areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies, and includes the use of innovative teaching techniques and computer assisted learning to extend students to and beyond their individual capabilities. Whether they are students with special needs due to physical or mental disabilities, students who are interested in vocational training for immediate entry into the world of work, college bound or gifted students who want to be challenged with top quality courses in mathematics and science, students in Bay city ISD are able to find programs to help them become thoughtful, productive and self-fulfilled citizens. Students in our District do extremely well on state required tests and other standardized exams. More then 85% of all students achieve grade-level mastery on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) test, and the overall scores have risen each of the last four years. Our most recent results from the nationally recognized SAT and ACT college entrance exams showed Bay city HS seniors' average scores to be above the state and national averages. Nearly 90% of the students participating in Advanced Placement courses received college credit in courses ranging from History and English to Biology, Chemistry and Calculus. In addition to vocational courses in Welding, Auto Mechanics, Building Trades, Computer Drafting, Health Services and Cosmetology, students are offered opportunities to participate in a full-range of extra-curricular activities that include service clubs, girls softball, swimming, journalism, dance team, debate and theater. The Fighting Black Cats have won state championships in football, basketball and track and continue to be a competitive force across the state. We hope you will want to know more about our District and how we can help your children realize their full potential.
