COMPUTERS

KEYBOARDING: This course is for those who need to learn basic typing skills. Since you will be learning on the computer, you’ll be ready for word processing. Begins October 3; ends November 7; 6 weeks; Tuesday; 7:00-9:00PM; BCHS-B2; $42; Annie Green.

INTRODUCTION TO IBM-PCs: This course is for those with no previous computer experience. It is a general introduction to computer usage. Begins October 2; ends November 6; 6 weeks; Monday; 7:00-9:00PM; BCHS-B2; $42; Annie Green.

INTRODUCTION TO WINDOWS: The student should have a very basic knowledge of computers, like using a mouse. This course is an excellent introduction to the windows environment. Begins October 4; ends November 8; 6 weeks; Wednesday; 7:00-9:00PM; BCHS-B2; $42; Annie Green.

BEGINNING MS WORD: MS Word is probably the most universal word processing application for PCs. The student should have basic keyboarding skills and familiarity with using a mouse. Begins October 5; ends November 2; 5 weeks; Thursday; 6:30-9:00PM; BCHS-B3; $42; Ken Madsen.

INTERMEDIATE MS WORD: This course is a continuation of BEGINNING MS WORD. The student should take the beginning level course first or have instructor approval. Begins November 9; ends December14; skip November 23; 5 weeks; Thursday; 6:30-9:00PM; BCHS-B3; $42; Ken Madsen.

BEGINNING MS EXCEL: MS Excel is probably the most universal spreadsheet application for PCs. The student should have basic keyboarding skills and familiarity with using a mouse. Begins October 5; ends November 2; 5 weeks; Thursday; 6:30-9:00PM; BCHS-B1; $42; Odie Milner.

INTERMEDIATE MS EXCEL: This course is a continuation of BEGINNING MS EXCEL. The student should take the beginning level course first or have instructor approval. Begins November 9; ends December 7; skip November 23; 4 weeks; Thursday; 6:30-9:00PM; BCHS-B1; $42; Odie Milner.


HEALTH

[NOTE: A one-time book expense of $13.50 on any or all HEALTH classes (CPR and FIRST AID), payable at class.]

ADULT CPR: This is a 4-hour course that upon successful completion will give you Red Cross certification. Students must weigh at least 100 pounds. October 3; Tues.; 6:00-10:00PM;BCHS Library Foyer; $15; Red Cross.

INFANT AND CHILD CPR: This is a 4 hour course that upon successful completion will give you Red Cross certification. Students must weigh at least 100 pounds. Oct 17; Tues.; 6:00-10:00PM; BCHS Library Foyer; $15; Red Cross.

STANDARD FIRST AID: This is a 4 hour course that upon successful completion will give you Red Cross certification. October 31; Tuesday; 6:00-10:00PM; BCHS Library Foyer; $15; Red Cross.


ART

COLLAGE: Learn the age-old art of Collage. Composing a multitude of such elements as colored papers, newsprint, photographs, magazine clippings, etc. pasted to a background surface. Begin October 6; end November 10; 6 weeks; Friday; 5:00-7:00PM; Art League Bldg.; $46 + $15 for supplies available from instructor; Zeinab Ghais; ages 16+.

BEGINNING PAINTING/DRAWING/WATERCOLOR: This course covers beginning and intermediate levels for those wanting to learn how to paint and draw. Watercolors and charcoal will be included. Begin October 5; end November 9; 6 weeks; Thursday; 6:30-8:30PM; Art League Bldg.; $46 + $25 for supplies available from instructor; Marguerite Bundick; ages 16+.

INTRODUCTION TO CHALK/OIL PASTEL: This class is designed for the creative artist who’s looking to get their hands dirty! Focusing on the techniques and color theory through the medium of chalk pastels. Begin October 4; end November 8; 6 weeks; Wednesday; 5:00-7:00PM; Art League Bldg.; $46 + $15 supplies available from instructor; Brenda Winters; ages 16+.

CHARCOAL LIFE DRAWING, INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: Good life drawing skills are the foundation of artistic mastery. This class will focus on the traditional techniques of charcoal through the study of the still life, landscape, and the model. Begin October 3; end November 7; 6 weeks; Tues.; 5:30-8:00PM; Art League Bldg.; $70 + $15 supplies; Ramsey Truitt; ages 16+.


PERSONAL GROWTH

BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH: Spanish is becoming more and more important in our daily lives. This beginning level course will start you on your way to conversing in Spanish. Begins September 26; ends October 31; 6 weeks; Tuesday; 7:00-9:00PM; BCHS-207; $42 plus book available at class; Mary Jane Briones.

BEGINNING COUNTRY & WESTERN DANCE: Couples and singles are all welcome. Come learn to dance the Waltz, Polka, Cotton-Eyed Joe, Schottische, and Texas Two Step. Begins September 26; ends October 31; 6 weeks; Tuesday; 6:30-8:00PM; McAllister Junior High Cafeteria; $31 per person; Cathy Westinghouse.

STUDY SKILLS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND ADULTS: Learn the strategies that will enable you to be the best student possible. Course includes the following topics: learning process, listening skills, textbook study, test-taking techniques, and time management. Begins October 11; ends October 18; 2 weeks; Wed.; 7:00-9:00PM; BCHS-201; $15; Karen Reddix.

WOMAN TO WOMAN: RETURNING TO SCHOOL: This is a one night, 2 1/2 hour class focusing on the necessary coping strategies and compromises that women with family and/or work can use to succeed in school and achieve their goals. October 4; Wednesday; 7:00-9:30PM; BCHS-201; $11; Karen Reddix.

JOB APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW SEMINAR: Learn to complete applications accurately and neatly---this is the employer’s first impression. Prepare for the interview by working on body language, answers to commonly asked questions, and follow-up strategies. Begins October 25; ends November 1; 2 weeks; Wednesday; 7:00-9:00PM; BCHS-201; $15; Karen Reddix.


ONLINE COMPUTER CLASSES

FOR CHILDREN/TEENS & ADULTS

A new way to learn online and at home - "awesome," "creative,’ "fun," "cool" - overheard expressions from those who take online courses - they are designed so that you can take them at a time that suits YOU, in the convenience of your OWN HOME, on a day that SUITS YOU! Each course averages 18 hours of fun, guided Internet activities prepared by Certified Teacher Barbara Denny George, Ed. D., a past technology coordinator and avid genealogist. All you need to get started is a computer, modem, Internet connection and Internet browser (Netscape/Internet Explorer). Be sure to include your E-mail address when registering. You will be contacted by E-mail and given a password with further instructions on how to begin your new Online Experience!

WHAT IS GENEALOGY? HOW DO I USE THE INTERNET FOR GENEALOGY? COURSE 1: Learn how to trace your family history using the Internet. A course for persons new to Genealogy and/or the Internet. It is a fun way to start tracing your family history and using the Internet at the same time. The instructor is very patient and leads newcomers through the Internet with ease. Those who prefer a faster pace are able to do so because the course is self-paced. It covers: 1. Charts and forms and how to acquire information for them; 2. Popular genealogical sites; 3. Surname sites 4. Search engine tips; 5. Mailing lists and photographs 6. Organizing your data; 7. Computer software for genealogy. October 14 - November 13; $28, ages 12+.

WHERE TO FIND SPECIFIC GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET COURSE 2: A course that provides a variety of activities for these needs that come after longer periods of researching. Participants learn how to find the "unusual" and "miscellaneous" on the Internet. October 14 - November 13; $28; ages 13+.

EXPLORING CIVIL WAR SITES ON THE INTERNET: A wonderful self-paced online course for Civil War enthusiasts, and those who want to learn more about the Civil War. Explore diaries, letters, newspapers. Reenact battles and follow up commentary. View photographs. Learn how to find your ancestors who fought in the Civil War. October 26 - November 25; $28, ages 14+.

STAMP COLLECTING AND THE INTERNET: You may want to work on the Scout Merit Badge, start a new hobby or revitalize an old one. Learn the basics of postal collecting (it’s not just stamps, you know) and visit several sites on the Internet. Completion Certificates available upon request. October 26 - November 25; $28; ages 9+.

AMERICAN PATRIOTISM: An introduction to American History through exploration of selected sites on the Internet. An investigation of American patriotism and the patriots who started it all. A review of American symbols and a look at historical documents and events. October 26 - November 25; $28; ages 12+.

THE ZIPPER CONNECTION: Never before has math been so much fun! You will zip through problems using the Internet and participate in challenge puzzles with an alien. Have you ever used animals to help with math? Have you ever tied knots online? You will learn how to do it all at the Zipper Connection. October - 26 - November 25; $28; ages 9-14.

THE VELCRO CONNECTION: More math fun on the Internet! Try your hand at fun math challenges. Makes Algebra and Geometry, Trig and other math stuff fun! Math will stick to your brain like Velcro! October 26 - November 25; $28; ages 12-17.

WHEN PIGS FLY: The crazy logic of science on the Internet! Explain the unexplainable! This course deals with introductory science concepts and really gives you a chance to do some neat experiments both on and off line. Use sliced cheese to understand fractures. What do cheeseburgers and science have in common? Participate in online treasure hunts. Fun and learning are guaranteed! October 26 - November 25; $28; ages 9-14.


HOW TO ENROLL

Three methods of enrollment are provided for your convenience.

BY MAIL: Mail check with name, address, phone number and class/classes you want to take to Bay City ISD Community Education, 2619 8th Street, Bay City, TX 77414. If the class is on the Internet, please make sure you include your email address. Make checks payable to Bay City ISD Community Education.

BY PHONE: Register by phone only if you plan on using one of the following credit cards: VISA, Discover, or MasterCard. Call (979) 245-1604 for your credit card registration.

IN PERSON: Bay City ISD Community Education is located on the Cherry Elementary campus, 2619 8th Street. We serve our clients on a first come, first serve basis. To ensure your spot in a class, try to register early as most of our classes have a specified maximum limit, particularly our computer classes.


INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Community Education classes will not meet if Bay City High School is dismissed due to inclement weather. Individuals will not be contacted by the Community Education office.


REFUND POLICY

A refund of fees will be made in full if a class is cancelled, or if a student withdraws prior to the first class meeting. An eighty percent (80%) refund of fees will be made if a student withdraws prior to the second class meeting.

NO REFUNDS AFTER THE SECOND CLASS MEETING
