MEETING REMINDER,  The next Teen Health Fair planning session is, Monday, June 17th, 9:00 am at the Bay City Service Center. Committee chairman please bring booth sign-up sheets, letters asking for door prizes, refreshments, etc.  I will need to have lists of participants, donors, etc. for future press releases and fliers.  If you are unable to attend please give us a progress report beforehand.

The Bay City Coastalaires will be presenting their June Dinner Show at the Bay City Country Club on June 13th, 14th, and 21st.   Tickets must be purchased in advanced and are available from any Coastalaires member.  For more information about the Coastalaires you can see their web site at www.coastalaires.org.

The following is the schedule for graduation ceremonies in Matagorda County schools: Tidehaven High School - Friday, 7:30 p.m., Tiger Stadium in El Maton, 47 candidates for graduation; Palacios High School - Friday, 8 p.m., Shark Stadium in Palacios 109 candidates for graduation.

Hospice Support Care will present "Life After Loss," a six week group support program designed by the American Cancer Society to help bereaved people better understand the grief process, their emotions and how to cope with them.  Trained facilitators experienced in grief work offer a combination of teaching and discussion and learning activities to individuals who have experienced the death of a loved one.  The series will be held every Monday through June 24, 4:30 to 6 p.m., at the Bay City Service Center.  For more information, call 979-245-5766.

The Bay City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, through it Educational Activities Committee, is offering a scholarship to help a student complete a degree in education.  To be eligible, an applicant must currently be a college junior, beginning the senior year in September 2002 and working toward a degree in education.  Application deadline is July 8.  Forms are available at the chamber office or by calling 979-245-8333.

A volunteer summer school program will be available for children of limited English proficiency in Bay City ISD.  Children must be eligible for the kindergarten or first-grade bilingual program in August 2002.  The program will be offered at Roberts Elementary School beginning June 5 through July 17.  Children will attend classes from 8 a.m. to noon.  School transportation will be available following the first day.  For more information, call 979-245-5766.

Registration applications are being accepted for the Texas Lions Camp Summer Camp 2002.  Activities include swimming, boating, music, sports, horseback riding, photography and much more.  The Texas Lions Camp, open to children ages eight to 15 with disabilities, is located in Kerrville.  For more information, call 979-24-3329.

The Bay City Blackcat All-Sports Booster Club is currently having its annual membership drive.  The club supports all boys and girls sports, and gave $10,800 in scholarships last year.  Memberships range from $15 to $100.  For more information, call 979-245-5141.

Teen Court is looking for volunteers the first second and third Tuesday of each month.  Teen Court meets from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bay City Municipal Court Building on 6th Street.  For more information contact B. J. Wise at 979-245-1401.

The Blessing American Legion Cecil Lee Post 249 holds bingo at 2 p.m. each Sunday.  The public is invited to attend.  For more information, call 979-245-6321.

The Matagorda County Crime Stoppers needs the public's help in solving crimes.  Anyone with information about a crime in Matagorda County is asked to call 979-244-TIPS (8477) or 1-800-299-BUST (2878).  Information leading to a felony arrest and/or a grand jury indictment may earn the caller a cash reward.  Callers to Crime Stoppers do not have to give their names.

Project Rio is an employment service program specifically for ex-offenders.  The Texas Workforce in cooperation with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Youth Commission provides special services designed to reintegrate ex-offenders into the workforce.  Project Rio provides incentives and benefits to employers who hire ex-offenders.  For more information on Project Rio contact Kay Roberts at Gulf Coast Careers, 3501 Ave. F in Bay City, or call 979-245-4808, Ext. 205.

The Crisis Center needs your tax-deductible donations for its resale shop.  Proceeds from the resale shop to go to help maintain the shelter and also help clothe those in need.  Donations may be brought by 2805 4th St., Bay  City, from 8:30 p.m.  Monday through Friday.  All items must be in good usable condition.

The Bay City Evening Lions Club is seeking new members.  The club meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at Cattleman's Restaurant.  If you are interested in becoming a member of Lions, contact Helen Wagner at 979-244-1777.

The Bay City Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Market Days on the Bay City downtown square.  Dates on the square include June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21, Oct. 19, and Nov. 16.  The Market Days of Dec. 21 will be held in the Bay City Civic Center.  For more information, call 979-245-8333.

The Gulf Coast Chapter TASO Football is looking for officials for the 2002 season.  Classes are available in May.  If you are interested in officiating high school and junior high school football in the surrounding area, please call Jerry Sides at 713-329-9288.  No previous experience is necessary.

The Matagorda County Chapter of the Merican Red Cross will host a Fundamentals of Instructor Training course from 6-10 p.m. beginning Friday, July 26.  Participants must be 17 years of age.  The Red Cross will also hold a Community First Aid and Safety Instructor course from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28.  Participants must hold  current FIT certificate.  Call 245-3065 to register or for more information.

The Memory Makers Quilt Guild meets the last Wednesday of each month at 9:30 am in the Multi-purpose building at the Matagorda County Fairgrounds on Nichols Road in Bay City.  This month's meeting is June 26 and features a program called "Basting Party" that will introduce the newest and quickest methods to baste quilts.  Guests and new members welcome.  Contact Margaret Byrd at (979) 245-8799 for more information or to purchase tickets for the raffle quilt.

 

The Matagorda County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its 2002 Annual Meeting at 10 a.m. on June 28 at the International Bank of Commerce upstairs conference room.  This meeting is for the purpose of electing the 2003 board of directors, considering reports as made by the 2002 board, and other businesses.  All donors, volunteers, and interested parties are invited to attend.  Refreshments will follow the meeting.  For more information, call (979) 245-3056.

The R.E.C. (recreational entertainment center) Spot, a place for teens ages 11-15 to meet with friends and have a god time, will be held from 7-10 p.m. on Friday, June 28 and July 26 at the Service Center.  All teens are invited by the Bay City Parks and Recreation Department.

For those 3rd through 5th graders who'd like to see their name in print - here's your chance to get published!  The library will host a poetry workshop from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, June 29 at the Bay City Public Library based on the materials complied by Marie Staubbs, a local fifth grade teacher, and the resource book entitled "Adventures of Doctor Alphabet".  Participants will receive a copy of their group's work and special recognition at the summer reading program closing ceremony.  Pre-registration is required.

Prepared childbirth classes will begin Tuesday, July 2 through July 30.  Classes are on Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. at Matagorda General Hospital.  Total cost for the classes is $40.  To register, or for more information contact Linda Ely at 241-6607.

The congregation of Matagorda United Methodist Church will welcome new pastor Fran Fogger and husband Carl to the community with an after-church luncheon beginning at noon in the fellowship hall.
