United Way - Definition

"There is a light in the world, a healing spirit more powerful than any darkness we may

encounter. Sometimes we lose sight of this force when there is suffering, too much pain. Then suddenly, the spirit will emerge through the lives of

ordinary people who hear a call and answer in

extraordinary ways"

            Mother Teresa

James Roberson Retirement

James Roberson has been an inspiration and dedicated volunteer for numerous groups in Matagorda County for decades.   Mr. Roberson is well known for his assistance to BC Day Care, BC Police Dept. Explorers, Boy Scouts of America, Boys & Girls Club-Palacios, E A C, BCHS Key Club, BC Kiwanis, Literacy Volunteers of America, Matagorda County United Way, Ministerial Alliance, Salvation Army, Salvation Army Food Pantry, and Teen Court to name a few.   Mr. Roberson wears other hats as Minister at New Faith Baptist Church in Wild Peach, previous Man of the Year for Bay City Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture, Father, Grandfather, and wonderful cook for countless organizations.  Mr. Roberson is also an active volunteer not only in Matagorda County, but surrounding counties as well.

James Roberson has worked 29 years for the Sam Houston Area Council as a Paraprofessional in Matagorda County.
He has had a hand in starting over twenty five different Boy Scout units. James' contributions to the Sam Houston Area Council staff include spiritual, professional, and direct leadership. Everyone on the staff will truly miss him.
James has served as a mentor, inspiration, and role model to thousands (not hundreds but thousands) of youth, leaders, and associates. He is truly an outstanding example of the best that we can all strive to be and above all "A Good Scout".

MCHD welcomes new administrator.  Welcome Mr. Voss we look forward to working with you in the coming years to bring good health care to those in our community.

Literacy Advisory Board

There is a growing interest in establishing a First Book-Matagorda organization to get books into the hands of needy children.
First Book is a national nonprofit organization that works with local communities to support children's literacy by ensuring that children have their own books at home and develop a joy of reading and a love of learning.

Because of the expression of local interest and the fact that there is a substantial need in the area, there will be an exploratory meeting to create a Local Advisory Board for the Matagorda County area.  The meeting will be held on May 12, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bay City Service Center, 2105 Ave. M, Bay City, TX.

Please contact Kim Effenberger at 245-5852 or Brenda Harris at 245-2008 for more information.
